My Favorite Tropes to Read and Write
by Kristin Miller
My favorite tropes to read are enemies-to-lovers (because I think the bickering between the hero and heroine leads to amazing sexual tension), mistaken identity (because it’s fun to watch a couple stumble over themselves as they discover each other’s true identity), boss-secretary relationships (because…well, there is something undeniably hot about crossing that line), and Alpha males.
In , I tried to incorporate all of those.
Drake is an Alpha to the core. He personifies the boldness and confidence of a normal alpha hero, but because he is a true Alpha of the Seattle Wolf Pack, he embodies the position so much more. (And he’s so much sexier for it!)
If I was going to write a boss-secretary relationship, I was going to write one that was far from normal. Drake Wilder is the CEO of a major Seattle-based corporation. He’s cold and calculating, running on figures and numbers and data reports. Emelia Hudson is not only his carefree secretary, but the owner of a bar that his company “illegally” purchased.
Quite the snag, right?
The set-up worked perfectly to incorporate the enemies-to-lovers trope. Emelia is livid that Drake’s company purchased her bar, then refused her the decency of a meeting to figure out why she had a deed to the same building. Driven by bitterness, Emelia demands answers and doesn’t realize she’s falling for Drake until she puts the anger behind her.
The mistaken identity trope was more difficult to include in the plot, which is why the trope only exists in the first chapter. When Drake and Emelia first meet, they are at an office Halloween party. Emelia plans to seduce the jerk-off boss who bought her bar, chain him to his bed, take pictures of him and Instagram them to the Web. She wants revenge for being dismissed and glanced over. But once they meet, and Drake purposefully leaves out the part about being her boss, thoughts of revenge go flying out the window. Sparks fly. Emotions run hot. It isn’t until the morning when Emelia is in the office that she realizes Drake Wilder is not the Big Bad Wolf, but the big bad boss man.
I think adding my favorite tropes to the book made it come to life. I wrote what I wanted to read, and I had a great time doing it.

Book #1 in the Seattle Wolf Pack series
CEO and alpha werewolf Drake Wilder has given up the search for his one true love. When he discovers that she’s a secretary in his company, Drake’s primal instincts kick into overdrive.
What he wouldn’t give to have her fingers rake over his body instead of the keyboard…
Free-spirited bartender Emelia Hudson wants nothing more than to make her Seattle-based bar succeed. But when profits decline, she slips into a dress suit and secures a nine-to-five. After learning that her bar has become property of Wilder Financial, Emelia is determined to get some answers.
Two can play the ruthless business game. If only her attraction to the boss wasn’t so intense…
When Drake’s twin brother senses that Drake has found his match—and now inherits their father’s billion dollar estate—he hatches a plan to take Emelia out. Drake vows to protect her at all costs, but he might have to pay with his own life.
